{"id":2,"date":"2010-12-15T00:59:45","date_gmt":"2010-12-15T08:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/solon.barocas.org\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2026-04-01T11:46:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T19:46:52","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/solon.barocas.org\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m a Senior Principal Researcher in the New York City lab of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/lab\/microsoft-research-new-york\/\">Microsoft Research<\/a>, where I&#8217;m a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/theme\/fate\/\">Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI (FATE)<\/a> research group.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/infosci.cornell.edu\/\">Department of Information Science<\/a> at Cornell University, Faculty Associate at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.harvard.edu\/\">Berkman Klein Center for Internet &amp; Society<\/a> at Harvard University, and Affiliated Fellow at the <a href=\"https:\/\/law.yale.edu\/isp\">Information Society Project<\/a> at Yale Law School.<\/p>\n<p>My research explores ethical and policy issues in artificial intelligence, particularly fairness in machine learning, methods for bringing accountability to automated decision-making, and the privacy implications of inference.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m co-author of the textbook <em><a href=\"https:\/\/fairmlbook.org\">Fairness and Machine Learning: Limitations and Opportunities<\/a><\/em> and co-founder of the ACM conference on <a href=\"https:\/\/facctconference.org\/\">Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAccT)<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m a Senior Principal Researcher in the New York City lab of Microsoft Research, where I&#8217;m a member of the Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI (FATE) research group.
